Air Fryer Sausage, Peppers and Onions Sandwiches

Description

These Air Fryer Sausage, Peppers and Onions Sandwiches are made entirely in the air fryer! From cooking the sausage, peppers and onions to toasting the bun and melting the cheese there is no need to use any other pans or appliances! 


Ingredients

Scale

1 19oz package mild or hot Italian sausage

1 large yellow onion, sliced thin

3 bell peppers sliced thin*

2 tbsp olive oil

2 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp salt

dash ground black pepper

5 sub rolls

15 slices provolone cheese


Instructions

Preheat air fryer to 400°F

Spray air fryer basket with olive oil spray

Place the whole sausages in the fryer basket and “fry” for 8 minutes, flipping them over at the 4 minute mark

While the sausage are cooking, add the onions and peppers to a large bowl

Pour in the olive oil add the garlic powder, salt and black pepper, toss

After 8 minutes, remove the sausage from the air fryer and place on a cutting board

Add the peppers and onions to the air fryer basket and “fry” for 10 minutes at 400°F, tossing once at the 5 minute mark

While the peppers and onions are cooking, slice the sausages into 1/2″ pieces

After 10 minutes, add the sausages to the air fryer basket with the peppers and onions, toss

Turn the air fryer back on for 5 more minutes at 400°F

When it is done, transfer the sausage, peppers and onions to a clean bowl

Slice the 5 sub rolls down the center top

Lay 2 slices of provolone cheese in each roll

Top with a generous portion of the sausage, peppers and onions

Lay another piece of provolone cheese over the top of the sausage, peppers and onions

Carefully transfer the sandwiches to the air fryer, fry each sandwich for 3 minutes at 400°F to toast the roll and melt the cheese**

Carefully remove the sandwiches from the air fryer with a spatula or tongs

Serve immediately***

Notes

*can use any color – I used 1 red, 1 green and 1 orange

**Depending on the size of your air fryer and the shape of the basket you may need to toast the sandwiches one at a time, or you may be able to fit 2-3 at a time.

***You can make the sausage, peppers and onions in advance and then assemble and “fry” the sandwiches when you are ready to eat.
