Friday Favorites – Trifle

On Monday I told you I would have more to share about Trifles later in the week. Now it’s later and here it is! I want to start off by sharing a little bit more about what trifle is because I was shocked by how few people knew what it was when I brought it out at our NYE party. It is a layered dessert made with cake, pudding, candy/fruit/topping of your choice and whipped cream that goes in a fancy bowl. It is seriously one of the easiest desserts to make – all you have to do is make a boxed cake, a box of instant pudding, pick out your favorite add-in and buy a tub of cool whip, layer them each in a bowl and call it a trifle. You can choose whatever flavor your desire – chocolate raspberry, peaches and cream, peanut butter cup, you name it! Easy-peasy!

Trifle has a long history with my family and it is one of our favorite desserts. We have had it at many family gatherings and whenever we do the “Legend of the Trifle” always emerges:

Nearly 30 years ago before I was born my Aunt and Uncle lived up the street from my parents. Many nights they would meet up after dinner. This gathering would almost always involve dessert of some kind. One particular summer night my mom made a vanilla based trifle with seasonal fruit filling and brought it over to my Aunt and Uncle’s house. Both my dad, Bill, and uncle, Jack, had a bowl and a spoon (my mom and aunt apparently were not indulging that evening), they each filled their bowls with trifle. They were enjoying each other’s company and conversation, over the course of about an hour they had filled and re-filled their bowls so many times that they realized, “whoops we finished the whole trifle”… I’m sure they did not feel so well that evening, but if you ask them about it now they respond “oh, we were young then…”. The funniest part of the story is that they really did not notice they were eating the whole thing until it was gone. That is the best/worst thing about trifle, there is no real serving size, it’s not like you have a slice of trifle… you have a bowl and the size of that bowl is left up to you ๐Ÿ™‚

My mom said the trifle was on the smaller side, similar to the one I made for NYE above. Not like this monstrosity I made for Christmas a few years ago:

Have you had trifle? What is your favorite kind?

Happy Friday – Enjoy the weekend!
