Cinnamon Sugar Sour Cream Baked Donuts

Donuts were always a treat in our house growing up! Though I love muffins and coffee cake too, there is something so much more fun about a donut, right!?

Until just a few years ago I had never made donuts at home. Then donut pans became popular and baking donuts at home become much more of a thing. Admittedly, I still have not made classic deep fried donuts at home, but having the ability to make baked donuts for the occasional treat is a lot of fun!

How to Make Sour Cream Baked Donuts

What I love about this recipe is you don’t even need to get out a mixer! Simply whisk together all the dry ingredients in one bowl and the wet ingredients in another. Then you add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix until the wet and dry are just fully combined – be careful not to over mix!

The dry ingredients consist of flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg. Just a small dash of nutmeg elevates the flavor and gives the donuts a touch of an old-fashioned plain donut feel! For the wet ingredients you’ll need an egg, sugar, sour cream, vegetable oil and vanilla extract. The sour cream combined with the small amount of vegetable oil give these donuts the perfect about of moisture, making them light and airy, but moist throughout!

The recipe makes just 6 donuts, making it the perfect breakfast treat for a small family. If you have a crowd, the recipe can easily be doubled for a dozen!

The Cinnamon Sugar Glaze

The cinnamon sugar glaze is the perfect compliment to the plain, moist donut. The thin glaze easily coats the top and side of the donut, adding a delightful layer of sweetness. The glaze also serves the important purpose of catching and holding onto the cinnamon sugar dusting!

How Long will they stay fresh?

These donuts stay fresh longer than you would think! Because the sour cream makes them so moist they don’t quickly dry out. Also, the glaze helps to lock in the moisture keeping them fresher longer. They are best eaten the day you make them, however they will keep up to 3 days on the countertop!

1 tbsp milk

1/4 cup white sugar

2 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

In a large bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg

In a medium-sized bowl whisk together the egg, sugar, sour cream, vegetable oil and vanilla extract

Slowly pour the wet ingredient mixture into the dry and mix until just fully combined

Spray donut pan with non-stick spray

Fill each donut cavity 3/4 full with batter*

Put in the oven to bake for 12 minutes

Remove from oven and set aside to cool for about 15 minutes

Carefully transfer donuts to a cooling rack and cool for at least 15 more minutes

Cinnamon Sugar Glaze

Add the confectioners sugar to a wide**, shallow bowl, whisk in the milk to make a thick glaze

In a small bowl whisk together the white sugar and cinnamon

Place a piece of parchment paper or aluminum foil under the cooling rack***

Dip the cooled donuts one at a time into the glaze and move around to completely coat the top and sides, hold it above the bowl for a few seconds to allow excess glaze to run off back into the bowl and then place back on the cooling rack

Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar over the donuts to coat
