S'mores Muddy Buddy Party Mix

It’s National S’mores Day! Aren’t S’more just the best way to celebrate summer!? Gooey, toasted marshmallow and melty milk chocolate sandwiched between 2 graham crackers makes the summer’s most nostalgic treat!

The best way to eat is enjoy a S’more is this traditional way, nestled by the campfire on a cool summer night. But, that chocolate, marshmallow, graham cracker flavor combo is just too good to stop there! Over the years I have shared many twists on a classic S’more recipe (see below). And today I have another one for you – S’mores Muddy Buddy Party Mix!

Muddy Buddies (aka Puppy Chow) are an irresistible classic holiday party treat… but when you make a S’mores version you can justify eating them in the summertime too 😉

Chex and Golden Grahams Coated in Chocolate and Speculoos

How are S’mores Muddy Buddies Different From Traditional?

Traditionally, muddy buddies are made with Chex Cereal coated in melted chocolate and peanut butter and tossed in powdered sugar. This S’mores Muddy Buddy Party Mix, makes a few swaps and changes:

  • Some of the Chex Cereal is swapped out for Golden Grahams. The flavor of Golden Grahams resembles that of graham crackers making it the perfect addition.
  • Instead of peanut butter, we use cookie butter. My favorite type is the Trader Joe’s Speculoos. Again, this adds graham cracker flavor!
  • Crushed graham crackers become a fine powder, we add that to the powdered sugar and to toss the muddy buddies in it to coat.
  • The final addition is toasted mini marshmallows and pieces of Hershey’s Milk Chocolate that we mix in with the muddy buddies to give it the pop of marshmallow flavor and make it a fun party mix!

How to Make S’mores Muddy Buddy Party Mix

The first step is an optional one. If you have a kitchen blow torch, use it to toast the mini marshmallows. Lay a piece of aluminum foil on a baking sheet and spread the mini marshmallows in a single layer. Use the torch to lightly toast the marshmallows. Set them aside to cool.

Add cookie butter, unsalted butter and Hershey’s Milk Chocolate to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second increments, mixing in between until smooth.

In a large bowl, combine the Chex Cereal and Golden Grahams. Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the cereal and mix until all the cereal is fully coated.

In a gallon-sized ziplock bag add the powdered sugar and crushed graham crackers. Add the coated cereal to the bag and toss until all the cereal is fully coated.

Spread the muddy buddies onto a parchment lined baking sheet to cool and harden.

Transfer the muddy buddies to a bowl and discard any excess powdered sugar/crushed graham cracker. Add the toasted marshmallows and remaining milk chocolate bar pieces to the muddy buddies and toss to evenly distribute.

That’s it! If you can resist eating it all at once, it will stay fresh stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator  for up to 3 weeks.
